Artist Statement:
For my abstract tile, I used varying types of coils and overlapped them together on top of a circular slab. I used one big twist in the middle of my tile and then I began placing folded coils along one side of the twist and spirals on the other side. I had many gaps on my tile so I just began filling it in with spheres, long and short coils, and other organic shapes. The Elements of Design that I emphasized was shape, form, and space. I created various organic shapes or curved forms in my tile. All of my coils "pop out" which emphasizes depth and space in my tile. When I was creating my tile I still had AP Biology class in my head so I was thinking about cell organelles. Each cell organelle has their own unique organic curves and shapes, so I wanted to recreate their structure in my tile. For example, the mitochondria has fold like coils and the rough endoplasmic reticulum have stud like coils attached to them. The tile would be the cell and the overlapping coils and shapes would represent the organelles. I personally like my abstract tile because I put a lot of detail and effort into it. At each step of the process I took my time and made sure I created the highest quality product from clay. I also added various kinds of coils and overlapped them to make it look interesting and more abstract. |
